Tonn
100 x 25 cm, Mixed media and gold leaf on cotton canvas, 2024
In the artist’s work “Tonn” (tuna), Cassar sought to create a thought-provoking work with the use of simple materials. The glass mimics the effect created as the sun hits the water’s surface. Under the glass, a solitary tuna fish can be seen. This imagery seeks to highlight the scarcity of wild tuna in our seas, while also playing on exploitative fish farming practices.
Fish farming is a massive industry which is causing huge repercussions on the natural world. The artist creates interesting imagery aimed at making the viewer question and reflect on the way mankind has toyed with the delicate balance of nature and the impact of its actions.
